Story

Hi everyone,

This month I'm taking part in the "Live Like Her Challenge" to raise awareness and funds for women over 55 experiencing homelessness.

This cause is deeply personal to me.

Many years ago, my daughter became so unwell that I left my job to care for her. Not long afterwards, my relationship ended and I got to the point where I had no income and nowhere for us to live.

I managed to get my daughter supported through a youth housing program and I was staying with a friend two hours away from her. I wasn't allowed to stay with her when I visited, if I did, she risked losing the accommodation she desperately needed.

So whenever I travelled to see her, I slept in my car.

I remember lying awake at night feeling frightened and vulnerable, but I also knew my daughter needed me to be there for her.

Thankfully, life eventually became more stable for both of us, but I have never forgotten what those nights felt like.

Today, women over 55 are the fastest growing group experiencing homelessness in Australia. Many are quietly sleeping in their cars, couch surfing or living with uncertainty every day.

For one night, I'll be sleeping in my car again. This time, it's by choice, to help raise awareness and funds so more women can access safe housing, support and the dignity they deserve.

If you're able to make a donation, no matter how small, I would be incredibly grateful. Every contribution makes a difference.

Thank you for your support.

The Forgotten Women

The Forgotten Women is Mangrove Community Homes' flagship project, a unique, grassroots housing initiative dedicated to women over 55 experiencing homelessness - the fastest growing cohort in Australia today. The Forgotten Women's mission is simple: to put a safe roof over the heads of as many vulnerable older women as possible. Through the acquisition of suitable properties, the project provides secure, safe, affordable housing that enables older women to age in place with security, stability and dignity.
